What is the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program?

The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (DV Program), also known as the green card lottery, is a United States government lottery that awards up to 50,000 immigrant visas each year.

Who is Eligible for the DV Lottery?

To be eligible for the DV Lottery, you must:

• Be a native of a country with a low rate of immigration to the United States;
• Have at least a high school education or its equivalent;
• Have at least two years of work experience in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience;
• Not have been convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude or a controlled substance;
• Be in the United States legally at the time of your application.

How to Apply for the DV Lottery

The DV Lottery is conducted once a year, and the application period typically opens in October and closes in November. The online application form is available on the U.S. Department of State’s website.

What Happens if I am Selected?

If you are selected in the DV Lottery, you will be notified by mail. You will then need to submit an application for an immigrant visa. If your visa is approved, you will be able to come to the United States to live and work.
